I ride a Road Bike
For anyone that's not racing on Saturday, I'm intending to road ride down to Bright and check out the race. Perhaps via Tawonga depending how I'm feeling on the morning and if Ant can't talk some sense into me... Probably leaving Albury about 6.30am.

Anyone's welcome to join me, but the catch is you'll either need to arrange someone to pick you up from Bright, or do the two-way trip...

Sling me an email if you're keen and we can work out details.

@Ant (and Doug)

Managed to get onto the Mavic-tech site and download the service proceedure. The Crossride hubs don't have adjustable bearings like the Crossmax's, but they use an 'expansible spacer' to set the right preload. If this isn't tensioned correctly, the pre-load falls away and things go wobbly. I decided to check this tension using a torque wrench and it was about 1/4 turn loose of the 20Nm that service manual said it should be. Refitted the wheel and there's no play, and the wheel spins freely :-)
If it goes crook again, I'll order a bearing kit as expansible sapcers usually don't like to be re-tensioned more than once.

Thanks for the responses.

@Capt Slow, if the freehub assembly is anything like the Crossmax and Ksyriums, the hub has an internal nolathane bush / sleeve which wears, and the hub also needs regular internal cleaning and servicing.

It's not a hard job, but there are fiddly little parts inside (pawls and springs) that have a tendancy to fly across the shed or workshop when the unsuspecting person opens the hub.

Also a possibility that one of the internal sealed bearings has collapsed (happened on a Reynolds rear wheel I have) which resulted in a funny feeling back wheel, especially under cornering or lateral load.

I'd recommend getting the hub serviced, the bush may require replacement, or one of the bearings may require replacement. Generally aftermarket bearings are available, but Mavic do like to have proprietry sizes for everything, so don't be surprised if you have to go genuine.

Good luck.

Next Club XC Race - 26/2/2012

A co-ordinator is still required to run this race. We also require a couple of additional volunteers for marshalling and timing.

As we need more members to become familiar with the process of running a race, setting up timing etc. a reasonably straightforward race like this would be the ideal opportunity for anyone able to help out. You will be provided with assistance.
Contact me by the email link please.
Thanks
Greg

Tech question:

My bike uses a Mavic Crossride wheelset and the rear hub has developed some 'play' in that you can slightly wobble the rim side-to-side and feel a tiny 'clunk'. It's enough to cause the brake disc to rub when pedaling.
The bearings are QRM sealed units with the pre-load factory set and the manual says that no adjustment should be needed. Have checked that the axle is seated in the dropouts properly and there's plenty of tension on the QR skewer.
Anyone come across this before?

Nice riding to all the AWMTBers that tackled the Alpine Audax yesterday! Heaps of familiar faces out there and many of them tackling the 200 and 250 routes. Some very impressive rides and some huge numbers being reported on Strava as well.

It was a stinking hot day for a ride, and it reaffirmed my hatred of Tawonga Gap - especially in full sun at 36 degrees. Not very nice! To anyone that climbed Buffalo in those conditions, not sure if you need a high five or a slap. Possibly both.

Re: Snakes alive!
Hey mtbers. Just a reminder to watch out for wildlife in our nail can. Was just up there this evening when I came across a moderately sized brown snake. For once I was happy that I am a "big girls blouse" on the bike as I had ample time to stop and make a u turn.
